Medventions Toronto

Call for Applications for Winter 2027 Program

Deadline to submit: October 30, 2026

About Medventions Toronto

The Medventions program is an immersive physician-led, hospital-based four-month fellowship program where multidisciplinary teams of clinicians, engineers, and life sciences graduates identify and validate hundreds of needs in a selected clinical area. Teams then select the most promising needs; prototype and test solutions; explore initial tech transfer, regulatory and reimbursement issues and develop a plan for further research and development.

The Medventions Toronto program, hosted at Sunnybrook Research Institute, has two openings for a temporary full-time Medventions fellow.

The Winter 2027 Medventions Toronto program will run from January to April 2027.

For the upcoming cohort, we are recruiting a multidisciplinary internship team to work on a pre-identified clinical innovation opportunity in collaboration with Sunnybrook’s St. John’s Rehab.

Rehabilitation Innovation Track

The Winter 2027 team will work alongside clinicians, rehabilitation professionals, engineers, and researchers on a project at the intersection of 3D imaging, artificial intelligence, computational design, and digital fabrication.

Advances in 3D scanning and additive manufacturing are creating new opportunities for personalized rehabilitation technologies. The project will explore how these technologies, together with AI and computational approaches, can help improve the development and clinical use of patient-specific rehabilitation solutions.

Unlike an open-ended needs-finding internship, this cohort will begin with a well-defined clinical need and innovation opportunity. Interns will nevertheless participate in clinical immersion and stakeholder engagement to understand the problem in depth, validate assumptions, assess existing workflows and technologies, and refine the technical requirements before moving into development. Specific project details and the initial clinical use case will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.

What Fellows Will Accomplish

The fellowship will progress from clinical understanding and needs validation through technical development, prototyping, and early validation.

Depending on the final scope, interns may work in areas such as 3D imaging and geometry processing, computer vision and AI, computational or parametric design, CAD workflow development, additive manufacturing, and rapid prototyping.

Interns will work closely with clinical stakeholders to assess usability, workflow, and implementation considerations. They will also gain exposure to the broader translation of healthcare technologies, including intellectual property, competitive landscape assessment, regulatory considerations, and commercialization planning.

The goal is to make meaningful technical progress during the four-month fellowship while establishing a clear pathway for continued development, validation, and clinical translation.

Program Structure

The program is structured into three immersive phases:

Phase 1: Clinical Immersion & Needs Identification
Fellows will work closely with clinical mentors and stakeholders to better understand the clinical environment, validate user needs, assess current technologies, and identify barriers to implementation.

Phase 2: Ideation & Concept Generation
Fellows will contribute to technology development activities, concept refinement, prototype design, and technical feasibility assessment.

Phase 3: Prototyping & Early Validation
Fellows will evaluate regulatory considerations, reimbursement pathways, implementation challenges, intellectual property considerations, and commercialization opportunities.

Throughout the program, fellows will work within an interdisciplinary team and receive mentorship from clinicians, engineers, researchers, and innovation leaders.

Who Should Apply

We are looking for individuals who are technically strong, curious, creative, and interested in applying engineering and technology to real clinical problems. Applicants from backgrounds such as biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence/machine learning, robotics, medical imaging, medical physics, computational design, and additive manufacturing are encouraged to apply.

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly valuable:

• Computer vision and machine learning

• 3D imaging, point-cloud, mesh, or surface processing

• CAD and parametric or computational design

• Additive manufacturing and 3D printing

• Biomedical product development and prototyping

• Software development

• Human-centred design and healthcare innovation

Applicants are not expected to have expertise across all of these areas. We aim to assemble a multidisciplinary team with complementary skills.

Eligibility

Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada and meet Mitacs Business Strategy Internship eligibility requirements.

Applications must be either:

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution; or

• A recent graduate who completed their degree within the past two years.

Exceptional senior undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows or recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Gain

Interns will gain hands-on experience working on a real healthcare innovation challenge within a hospital environment, with direct mentorship from clinicians, engineers, researchers, and rehabilitation professionals. The internship provides experience spanning clinical needs validation, technical development, prototyping, clinical translation, intellectual property, regulatory considerations, and commercialization.

Compensation

Two temporary full-time, paid internship positions are available. Compensation will be aligned with Medventions program funding guidelines.

How to apply

To apply, please submit the following as a single PDF file to Ahmed.nasef [at] sunnybrook.ca :

  1. Resume / Curriculum Vitae
  2. Cover letter, maximum one page, addressed to Dr. Amanda Mayo, describing: your interest in the opportunity; relevant technical, research, or project experience; and your interest in healthcare innovation and medical technology development
  3. Academic transcript(s), where applicable
  4. Names and contact information for two referees

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
