The Innovator’s Rx: Stories from Clinician Innovators is an exciting new seminar series hosted by Medventions, running quarterly at Sunnybrook. This dynamic series showcases clinicians—physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals—who are driving change in healthcare through their interactions with cutting-edge technologies, new treatment paradigms, and innovative approaches. Hear firsthand from those who have collaborated with med-tech companies, tested new technologies, engaged in clinical trials, explored novel healthcare solutions, and for some, have even launched their own companies.
Each session will provide valuable insights into how clinicians are shaping the future of medicine, from working with emerging technologies to influencing new treatment models. Learn from real-world experiences as clinicians share how they integrate innovation into their practices, overcome challenges, and contribute to advancing patient care and medical progress. For clinicians who have started companies, gain insights into what it takes to launch a healthcare-focused startup and balance clinical practice with entrepreneurship.

In this session of the Innovator’s Rx Series, oncology nurse and inventor Maria Plummer shares the inspiring journey behind Yewtwist—from a bedside idea to a tool now adopted across North America and beyond. Yewtwist is a groundbreaking tool designed to help nurses safely and efficiently disconnect tight intravenous (IV) and feeding tube connections, addressing a common challenge in clinical care with a simple yet highly effective solution.
Maria, a passionate advocate for nurse-led innovation, will explore how frontline insights can lead to meaningful change in healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. The device’s name draws inspiration from the Pacific Yew tree, the original source of Paclitaxel (Taxol), a chemotherapy drug that has saved countless lives—mirroring Yewtwist’s story of impact rooted in compassion and ingenuity.
Join us for this engaging session to hear how one nurse’s idea is transforming care, one twist at a time.
