2024 LECTURE SERIES

MEDVENTIONS FALL 2024 LECTURE SERIES

The Medventions Fall 2024 Lecture Series is a hybrid (in-person and virtual) educational series designed to equip the next generation of medtech innovators with the knowledge and skills they need to transform healthcare. The Lecture Series offers an excellent opportunity to learn about health technology innovation, how to validate healthcare needs, invent new medical technology products, and plan for their implementation into patient care. There are twelve (12) lectures in the Medventions 2024 Fall Lecture Series. 

EARN A CERTIFICATE IN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In-person Medventions Lecture Series attendees can earn a Certificate in Medical Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship by attending ten (10) or more lectures. Attendees interested in enrolling in the certificate program must indicate upon registration through Eventbrite. Attendees interested in obtaining a certificate must attend the lectures in-person. Certificates will be awarded at the end of the Lecture Series to eligible attendees.

LECTURE ONE

The Medical Technology Ecosystem in Canada: Challenges and Enablers

ABOUT THE LECTURE
In the inaugural lecture of this series, Prof. Kieran Murphy will explore the current challenges and future prospects of the Canadian medical technology industry. Prof. Murphy will delve into the pivotal issues and strategic trends that are currently influencing the sector in Canada. Attendees can expect unparalleled insights into the state of the medical technology industry and its entrepreneurship ecosystem.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Professor Kieran Murphy MB BAO BCH FRCPC FSIR graduated in 1986 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed his Radiology residency and Neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Michigan, and Interventional Neuroradiology fellowship at University of Geneva. From 1998-2008 he was Division Head of Interventional Neuroradiology at Johns Hopkins. Since 2008 he has been Prof of Radiology at University of Toronto. He holds 81 patents including vertebroplasty systems, bone cements, biopsy systems, and other medical devices to treat spine, neurovascular and CSF pathologies.

Healthcare Entrepreneurship & Start-Up Strategy

In the first part of this session, Dr. Courtney will share entrepreneurial perspectives and key insights into launching a healthcare technology company, drawing on his experience co-founding three companies in the medical technology sector.

The second part of the session will delve into the processes of clinical needs identification and value exploration within the healthcare field. This session will also include a hands-on exercise aimed at helping aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators identify unmet healthcare needs with significant impact.

Market Research & Analysis

ABOUT THE LECTURE
This session is designed to provide aspiring health-care innovators and entrepreneurs with a practical introduction to market research and the fundamentals of market analysis. Participants will be able to utilize methodologies and strategies to assess whether a potential technology is associated with a commercially viable market. Key learning objectives of this session include:

  1. Learn how to identify the market and define variable such as the market size, growth, and competitive dynamics 
  2. Learn how and when to perform primary vs. secondary market research and qualitative vs. quantitative market research
  3. Understand how to perform market landscaping, segmentation, and targeting
  4. Identify and effectively communicate the competitive landscape

Technology Transfer & IP Fundamentals

In this session, IPON’s IP Manager, Sonia Patenaude, will delve into the fundamentals of intellectual property (IP), discussing the different forms of IP and why IP matters to the growth of startups in the healthcare technology field. Sonia will also explore the IP protection process with an eye towards IP commercialization and demonstrate how decisions early on can have a long-lasting impact on your success.

Business Strategy

This lecture will provide a practical guide to setting up your business strategy including the process of raising funds and garnering support from key healthcare stakeholders for your emerging medical device technology. Participants will also explore the various business models suited for medical devices. Dr. Wodlinger will unpack the essential elements required in a good business case or early-stage pitch for medical device innovation, drawing on his decades of experience in the Canadian medical device sector.

Health Design Thinking

ABOUT THE LECTURE
Kasey Dunn will explain the guiding principles of design thinking and creativity and expand on diverse ideation and brainstorming methods that are typically utilized by entrepreneurs and innovators. Throughout the lecture, Dunn will demonstrate how beneficial a human-centred approach is when pursuing innovation in healthcare and how to actively apply a creative mindset to innovating novel solutions in healthcare.

Jayson Parker is Faculty Lead for Digital Health Technologies for the Master of Biotechnology Program. He is also an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream in the Department of Biology at the University of Toronto Mississauga and is cross-appointed to the Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Toronto.

Medtech Funding Approaches & Reimbursement

DATE: Tuesday, November 19, 4:30pm – 7:00pm ET

ABOUT THE LECTURE:
This session will consist of two lectures. The first lecture will focus on funding options for early-stage companies. We will explore the various funding sources available, the stages at which they are most appropriate, and the potential impact on both the company and its investors at the time of exit. Attendees will gain an overview of the funding landscape for innovators and learn about the key criteria investors use to assess business opportunities. In the second session, we will discuss the reimbursement landscape in Canada. Mark will provide a basic understanding of the pathways to successful reimbursement, and present a medical device reimbursement framework that can be applied when seeking medical device reimbursement.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Mark is known as a transformational leader drawing on his experience from a 30+ year career in Life Sciences. His extensive career includes various senior leadership positions in pharmaceutical and medical device multinationals like Novartis and Alcon as well as founding, running, and exiting a successful life sciences start-up venture. In 2017, Mark founded Janus Life Sciences Consulting to help other entrepreneurs drive their business success, focusing on seed and early-stage fundraising, strategy, and commercialization. Mark serves on the Expert Review Panels for both Genome Quebec’s Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) and the Ontario Centre of Innovation’s (OCI) Life Sciences Innovation Fund (LSIF). He also leads the Life Sciences Practice at Delphic Research. He is on faculty at the University of Toronto’s Master of Biotechnology program and Toronto Metropolitan University’s Life Sciences Talent Accelerator. Mark is on the Board of Directors and is former Chair of Life Sciences Ontario. He holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and the Schulich School of Business.
